Technology Can Be your Teacher

Experience is the best teacher, but technology is no slouch in teaching us the needed skills we need to run a business either. Aside from making it easier to perform certain functions, technology has been a key part on how we grow as entrepreneurs, managers and as a general leader.

From simple features like grammar and spelling check, to the more specialty specific solutions, technology has been teaching us different skills without the need for training or going back to school. The best part is that we are learning without even knowing it. Take some of the examples below:

Selling and Marketing

Most people are afraid to go into business because they don’t have skills to sell anything. However, there are a number of IT solutions that can help you determine sales and marketing strategies that work. There are a number of customer relationship management programs available in the market that helps you understand the intricacies of dealing with customers. From marketing to monitoring your business processes, it helps you learn how to deal with your market.

Project Management

If you are a novice manager, leading a business project can be a daunting task. However, with business project solutions like BaseCamp guiding you, leading a project becomes less tedious. Through these solutions, you can learn how to set goals for your subordinates, set tasks, monitor progress and recognize milestones reached by your team. By the time your project ends, you are fully ready to take on another one.

Business Communication Management

Business communication is more than just giving your employee an email, phone, and voicemail. You have to monitor the use of each communication resource and make sure that it is properly used.

That, though, can easily be learned with today’s communication tools. RingCentral VoIP service providers usually have a call management interface that lets you easily manage how you receive calls. You can easily add or delete extensions, add phone numbers, and monitor call logs of users. The most important skill to learn is documentation. Make sure that you are able to keep an updated copy of the users so that you always have an idea about the status of each line you are using.

Specialty Skills

With today’s IT solutions, you can learn certain skills that you normally have to train for. Take QuickBooks for example, though you would still need to learn basic accounting principles, it makes it easier for you to understand and perform bookkeeping for your business.

In today’s business environment, you have to be constantly updated about the latest technologies that it’s difficult to learn new skills. What you don’t realize is that adapting new technologies for your business also helps you develop more skills to boost your business.

Direct Edge Leads in Technology and Innovation

Originally founded in 1998 and operating under the name Attain ECN, Direct Edge is the fourth largest US exchange platform. The company was initially owned by Knight Capital Group, but was later acquired by the International Securities Exchange (ISE). The ISE, along with several other multinational banks are the majority stakeholders in the company, with the ISE holding the largest share.

Since its latest acquisition, William O’Brien, former NASDAQ executive, was appointed CEO over Directedge. He, along with other executives of the company, has lead the entity on its way to becoming the largest electronic global exchange platform. In late November 2012, the company plans to open a Brazilian exchange headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. This could be the first of many international platforms for them. Although the company is waiting for a formal regulatory approval, it has already launched a Brazilian website explaining why the company chose to locate in that area, and what it will bring to the global market.

Directedge offers dual exchange platforms that operate as separate entities from one another. The electronic platforms are EDGA and EDGX. They have the capabilities to both provide and take liquidities, and regularly handle the exchange of more than 1 billion trades per day. This accounts for between 10 and 12% of the market share. These technologies are brand-new and were designed to increase reliability and reduce latency.

In addition to its technology and innovation, Direct Edge is also known for their charity. They host a program called “Good Deeds”, where employees are encouraged to donate to charities in the immediate area. Donations of time and money have been given to nonprofits including the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Hudson County, and the St. Joseph’s School for the Blind. The company continues to donate tens of thousands of dollars to these organizations and other nonprofits in their area.

Brokers and dealers seeking membership to Direct Edge can find the necessary documents on their website, as well as instructions on how to complete them. The company also touts full transparency, has its rules and regulations for governance are also listed on the website.

With the large volume of trades conducted through its platform on a daily basis, Direct Edge is on the path to becoming the preferred electronic exchange provider. As the company continues to evolve, users of the platform will ultimately benefit by having access to enhanced exchange capabilities.
